EVA-Based Hot Melt Adhesive Formulations
Most EVA-based HMAs have no appreciable surface tack and are pressure insensitive at room temperature. They need to be bonded by hot tack at high temperature. They usually offer a relatively short open time (often less than 10 seconds) and a fast setting time. Open time and set time are largely dependent on the wax used - if it is included in the formulation, the VA content and the compatibility of EVA and tackifiers. Typical waxes used in hot melt adhesive formulations are synthetic, microcrystalline and polyethylene waxes. Wax can significantly reduce open time and speed up setting time. EVA with more VA content will give longer open time and slower setting time.

Some terms you may encounter when evaluating EVA hot melt adhesives:

Hot tack is a term that refers to the ability of an HMA to hold substrates together before curing or setting.

Open time is the time at which a usable bond can be formed after the glue has been applied. Many factors can affect open time, including temperature, substrate, adhesive and amount of adhesive used.

Set time is the time required to form an acceptable bond when two or more substrates are combined with an adhesive.
